Public Comment Period Open for Content Specifications for Certification Exams

November 7, 2024 – The American Board of Pathology (ABPath) is pleased to share the first draft of our comprehensive Content Specifications documents for public review. Many of the Member Boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties have detailed content guidance documents for residents and fellows preparing for certification and practice. Following this established practice, we have developed these guiding documents to support our pathology trainees in their preparation for certification and practice.

This initiative represents over eighteen months of dedicated work by our Test Development and Advisory Committees (TDAC), Trustees, and ABPath Staff. We are now eagerly seeking your valuable input to ensure these documents continue to fully serve our community’s needs.

We invite you to:

  • Review the documents in their entirety or focus on your area of specialty

  • Provide feedback through our survey link

  • Submit your recommendations no later than Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025 The Public Comment Period is now closed. Thank you.

Your feedback will be carefully compiled and forwarded to the respective TDACs for review and final editing. This collaborative approach reflects our commitment to an inclusive review of certification materials and our deep appreciation of our stakeholders as essential partners in the certification process.

We encourage residents and fellows to use the Content Specifications as a general study guide for the 2025 certification exams but please recognize this is not the final version of the documents.

Thank you for contributing your feedback to this important project. Your input will help shape the future of pathology certification and training.

Reassessment and Rescoring of ABPath Primary and Subspecialty Certification Examinations

Oct. 3, 2024 – ABPath recently conducted a reassessment and rescoring of the Primary and Subspecialty certification examinations. In doing so, ABPath identified that a small percentage of candidates (less than 2%) actually met the passing score requirements that were previously scored as slightly below the passing score threshold.

The impacted candidates have all been notified. Those candidates received a passing score for their respective certification examination and will receive a refund of their application fee, as well as any fees paid toward subsequent examinations. Impacted training programs will be receiving notifications soon.

ABPath has implemented improvements to our processes to prevent this issue in the future. For questions, email inquiries@abpath.org.

Tampa, Fla., ( October 23, 2023) – The American Board of Pathology (ABPath) is pleased to announce a significant change to its certification examination application and registration process.

Effective immediately for the 2024 exam season, ABPath will no longer offer a late application/registration deadline or assess a late fee for Primary and Subspecialty certification exams.

Historically, ABPath has offered applicants a late application deadline, accompanied by a late fee, in addition to the original deadline. However, moving forward, we will honor only one application deadline per exam, with the intention of expediting the application approval process for physicians seeking board certification in pathology.

The application/registration deadlines for upcoming certification exams are as follows:

Spring 2024 Primary Exam Application Deadline

January 15 at 11:59 pm EST

Fall 2024 Primary Exam Application Deadline

May 15 at 11:59 pm EST

Fall 2024 Primary Exam Registration Deadline (for those with a period of board eligibility)

July 15 at 11:59 pm EST

2024 Subspecialty Exams Application/Registration Deadline

May 15 at 11:59 pm EST
